Using Quick Search

How to do a Quick Search

1. Type one or more words in the Quick Search box that describe what you are looking for.

2. Use the pull down menu beside the text box to choose how you want 211Toronto.ca to find matches for your words:

All words: narrows the search to results where all your words are found
(default, unless you indicate otherwise).

Example: If you enter youth employment, 211Toronto.ca will find profiles that contain the words youth AND employment

Any words: broadens the search by including results where any of your words are found

Example: If you enter youth employment, 211Toronto.ca will find profiles that contain either the term youth OR the term employment

Exact phrase: narrows the search to results where all your words appear exactly in the order that you entered them

Example: If you enter youth employment, 211Toronto.ca will find profiles that contain the exact phrase "youth employment" with the words appearing exactly in the order that you typed them

Search Fields

Quick Search will look for your words in several different fields at once:

  • Organization name
  • Address
  • City
  • Postal code
  • Location
  • Languages
  • Subjects
  • Description
  • Comment

Word Variants

Use an asterisk (*) anywhere in a word to represent any number of letters. This is a useful way to retrieve variants of a word. Example: wom* will find both "woman" and "women."

Stop Words

There are some common words you should avoid when searching. These are called "stop words." They include words such as "for," "of," "about" and "the." Stop words are ignored by 211Toronto.ca unless you have chosen to search for "Exact phrase".
