Eligibility Those who have made contributions to the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) * surviving spouses and dependents may be eligible * see below for age and other qualifications * Canada has reciprocal social security agreements with many other countries -- see website for details
How to apply Apply 6 months before becoming eligible (not automatic) * application forms available online, by phone or in person at Service Canada sites -- see separate entries
Service description Monthly retirement pension available at 65 years (or between 60 and 64 years if earning requirements met during initial qualifying period) * disability benefits if under 65 years, plus allowance for dependent children * survivor benefits * orphan's benefit for dependent children * also death benefit (lump sum payment to estate, or persons responsible for funeral costs) * pension credits earned by either spouse during legal or common law marriage (same sex or opposite sex) may be divided equally (credit splitting) on termination of marriage or after separation for one year

Survivor and disability benefits subject to a qualifying period -- duration varies depending on length of individual's contributory period and benefit applied for * under certain conditions periods of contributions made in agreement countries may be added to periods of contributions under CPP to meet minimum qualifying period * amount of CPP benefits payable is in proportion to contributions
